UBUNTU-CVE-2026-98886: Medium severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/gma500: return errors from Oaktrail HDMI I2C reads xferread() waits for the HDMI I2C transaction to reach I2CTRANSACTIONDONE, but it ignores both timeout and signal returns from waitforcompletioninterruptibletimeout(). If the interrupt never advances the transaction state, the loop can wait forever. Return -ETIMEDOUT when the completion wait expires, propagate interrupted waits, and make the I2C masterxfer callback return the first transfer error instead of reporting a successful message count.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are exposed to this issue?
The affected software list includes Ubuntu Linux kernel packages for the standard, AWS, Azure, GCP, FIPS, AWS FIPS, Azure FIPS, and GCP FIPS variants. The issue is in the drm/gma500 Oaktrail HDMI I2C read path, so exposure depends on use of that driver and HDMI I2C transactions.
What condition triggers the failure?
An HDMI I2C transaction must fail to reach I2C_TRANSACTION_DONE, such as when the interrupt does not advance the transaction state. The affected code can then continue waiting indefinitely because timeout and interrupted-wait results are ignored.
What changes in the resolved version?
The fix returns -ETIMEDOUT when the completion wait expires, propagates interrupted waits, and causes the I2C master_xfer callback to return the first transfer error rather than a successful message count.
