UBUNTU-CVE-2026-99100: Medium severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: wifi: p54: validate firmware record lengths The p54 firmware parser accesses component ID and component version records without checking that their lengths cover the fields being read. A malformed record can therefore make the parser read past the record. Validate the component ID and component version record lengths before accessing their data. The descriptor record is also checked against the shortest descriptor length found in the supported firmware images. Reject descriptor values that underflow the RX offset or produce an empty RX range before updating the driver state.

Remediation
Recommended actions to resolve this vulnerability, in priority order.
- Compensating control
Reject descriptor values that underflow the RX offset or produce an empty RX range before updating driver state, and check the descriptor record against the shortest descriptor length in the supported firmware images.
- Compensating control
Validate component ID and component version record lengths to ensure they cover the fields being read before accessing their data.

Frequently Asked Questions
What conditions are required to trigger this issue?
The vulnerable code path is the p54 Wi-Fi firmware parser. Exploitation requires malformed firmware records, including undersized component ID or component version records, or descriptor values that underflow the RX offset or create an empty RX range.
Which Ubuntu kernel packages are listed as affected?
The listed software includes ubuntu/linux, ubuntu/linux-fips, ubuntu/linux-aws, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-aws-fips, ubuntu/linux-azure-fips, ubuntu/linux-gcp, and ubuntu/linux-gcp-fips.
What validation does the fix add?
The fix verifies component ID and component version record lengths before their fields are read. It also rejects descriptor records shorter than the minimum supported firmware descriptor length and rejects invalid RX offset and RX range values.
