UBUNTU-CVE-2026-99238: High severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: tracing: Hold tracetypeslock when updating modules in persistent instances tracemodulerecord() walks ftracetracearrays from the module notifier without tracetypeslock. A concurrent rmdir of an instance removes it from the list and frees it under that lock, so a module load or unload can walk into a freed tracearray.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who is exposed to this issue?
Systems using the listed Ubuntu kernel packages are exposed if persistent tracing instances are in use and can be removed while kernel modules are loaded or unloaded.
What conditions are required to trigger the vulnerability?
An attacker needs local access with low privileges. The race requires a concurrent removal of a tracing instance and a module load or unload, allowing the module notifier to access a freed trace_array.
How can I tell whether the vulnerable race is relevant on a system?
The issue is relevant where persistent tracing instances exist and may be removed while modules are being loaded or unloaded. The provided data does not identify a specific detection method or affected package versions.
