ZDI-CAN-28854: ZDI-26-168: GStreamer RIFF Palette Integer Overflow Remote Code Execution Vulnerability

Published Mar 6, 2026
·
Updated

This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected installations of GStreamer. Interaction with this library is required to exploit this vulnerability but attack vectors may vary depending on the implementation. The specific flaw exists within the handling of palette data in AVI files. The issue results from the lack of proper validation of user-supplied data, which can result in an integer overflow before writing to memory. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code in the context of the current process.

Other sources

This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected installations of GStreamer. Remediation

Recommended actions to resolve this vulnerability, in priority order.

  1. Compensating control

Because interaction with GStreamer is required to exploit the vulnerability, limit exposure by restricting which untrusted/remote AVI (RIFF palette) files are processed by affected GStreamer deployments (e.g., block or quarantine uploads/downloads from untrusted sources before they reach GStreamer).

  2. Compensating control

If possible for your environment, isolate the GStreamer processing component (e.g., run the service/container with minimal privileges) to reduce impact of potential remote code execution triggered via crafted AVI RIFF palette data.
