Apache Impala 4.1.0 through 4.5.2 are affected when an Impala executor webserver is configured to accept JWT/OAuth tokens. Deployments that do not use JWT/OAuth authentication for executor webservers are not described as affected.

Q: What does an attacker need to exploit the bypass?

The executor webserver must be configured to accept JWT/OAuth tokens. The issue causes bearer-token JWT signatures not to be validated, so the webserver accepts any valid JWT.

Q: What can be done if an upgrade cannot be performed immediately?

Disable JWT/OAuth authentication for Impala executors until the deployment can be upgraded. Version 4.5.3 fixes the issue.
