Buffer overflow in pngpread.c in libpng before 1.2.44 and 1.4.x before 1.4.3, as used in progressive applications, might allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a PNG image that triggers an additional data row.
Buffer overflow in libpng 1.0.x before 1.0.55, 1.2.x before 1.2.45, 1.4.x before 1.4.8, and 1.5.x before 1.5.4, when used by an application that calls the pngrgbtogray function but not the pngsetexpand function, allows remote attackers to overwrite memory with an arbitrary amount of data, and possibly have unspecified other impact, via a crafted PNG image.
It was found that libpng read uninitialized memory when it encountered a sCAL chunk that is empty, and improperly handles a sCAL chunk that lacks the terminating zero between the two strings that it conveys.
This was fixed in libpng-1.5.4, libpng-1.4.8, libpng-1.2.45, and libpng-1.0.55.

The pngsettext2 function in pngset.c in libpng 1.0.x before 1.0.59, 1.2.x before 1.2.49, 1.4.x before 1.4.11, and 1.5.x before 1.5.10 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) or execute arbitrary code via a crafted text chunk in a PNG image file, which triggers a memory allocation failure that is not properly handled, leading to a heap-based buffer overflow.
It was reported [1] that the fix for CVE-2004-0421 in libpng was inadvertently reverted during the 1.2.23 development cycle. The original flaw could be used to cause a denial of service via a carefully-crafted PNG image.
This would affect all versions of libpng >=1.2.23, including 1.4.x and 1.5.x.

It was found that in libpng, prior to 1.2.45, the error function received a NULL pointer, expressed erroneously as '\0', instead of the empty string "". This error was introduced in libpng-1.2.20, and pngdefaulterror() will crash in this case.
This was be fixed in libpng-1.5.4, libpng-1.4.8, libpng-1.2.45, and libpng-1.0.55.

A memory leak was found in the way libpng processed malformed Portable Network Graphics (PNG) images with Physical Scale (sCAL) extension. A remote attacker could create a specially-crafted PNG image and trick the local user into opening it in an application, using the libpng library, leading to denial of service (relevant libpng-based application crash).
