Integer Overflow

GStreamer EXIF Metadata Parsing Integer Overflow Remote Code Execution Vulnerability. This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected installations of GStreamer. Interaction with this library is required to exploit this vulnerability but attack vectors may vary depending on the implementation.

The specific flaw exists within the parsing of EXIF metadata. The issue results from the lack of proper validation of user-supplied data, which can result in an integer overflow before allocating a buffer. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code in the context of the current process. . Was ZDI-CAN-23896.

Buffer Overflow

GStreamer is a library for constructing graphs of media-handling components. A stack-buffer overflow has been detected in the vorbishandleidentificationpacket function within gstvorbisdec.c. The position array is a stack-allocated buffer of size 64. If vd->vi.channels exceeds 64, the for loop will write beyond the boundaries of the position array. The value written will always be GSTAUDIOCHANNELPOSITIONNONE. This vulnerability allows to overwrite the EIP address allocated in the stack. Additionally, this bug can overwrite the GstAudioInfo info structure. This vulnerability is fixed in 1.24.10.

Integer Overflow

GStreamer is a library for constructing graphs of media-handling components. The program attempts to reallocate the memory pointed to by stream->samples to accommodate stream->nsamples + samplescount elements of type QtDemuxSample. The problem is that samplescount is read from the input file. And if this value is big enough, this can lead to an integer overflow during the addition. As a consequence, gtryrenew might allocate memory for a significantly smaller number of elements than intended. Following this, the program iterates through samplescount elements and attempts to write samplescount number of elements, potentially exceeding the actual allocated memory size and causing an OOB-write. This vulnerability is fixed in 1.24.10.

GStreamer is a library for constructing graphs of media-handling components. An OOB-Write has been detected in the function gstparsevorbissetuppacket within vorbisparse.c. The integer size is read from the input file without proper validation. As a result, size can exceed the fixed size of the pad->vorbismodesizes array (which size is 256). When this happens, the for loop overwrites the entire pad structure with 0s and 1s, affecting adjacent memory as well. This OOB-write can overwrite up to 380 bytes of memory beyond the boundaries of the pad->vorbismodesizes array. This vulnerability is fixed in 1.24.10.

GStreamer is a library for constructing graphs of media-handling components. An uninitialized stack variable vulnerability has been identified in the gstmatroskademuxaddwvpkheader function within matroska-demux.c. When size < 4, the program calls gstbufferunmap with an uninitialized map variable. Then, in the gstmemoryunmap function, the program will attempt to unmap the buffer using the uninitialized map variable, causing a function pointer hijack, as it will jump to mem->allocator->memunmapfull or mem->allocator->memunmap. This vulnerability could allow an attacker to hijack the execution flow, potentially leading to code execution. This vulnerability is fixed in 1.24.10.

Moonlight-common-c contains the core GameStream client code shared between Moonlight clients. Moonlight-common-c is vulnerable to buffer overflow starting in commit 50c0a51b10ecc5b3415ea78c21d96d679e2288f9 due to unmitigated usage of unsafe C functions and improper bounds checking. A malicious game streaming server could exploit a buffer overflow vulnerability to crash a moonlight client, or achieve remote code execution (RCE) on the client (with insufficient exploit mitigations or if mitigations can be bypassed). The bug was addressed in commit 24750d4b748fefa03d09fcfd6d45056faca354e0.

Buffer Overflow, Race Condition

Race condition in the FastCopy optimization in the Array.Copy method in metadata/icall.c in Mono, when Moonlight 2.x before 2.4.1 or 3.x before 3.99.3 is used, allows remote attackers to trigger a buffer overflow and modify internal data structures, and cause a denial of service (plugin crash) or corrupt the internal state of the security manager, via a crafted media file in which a thread makes a change after a type check but before a copy action.

It was reported [1] that threads in Mono were not properly cleaned up upon finalization, so if one thread was resurrected, it would be possible to see the pointer to freed memory. This could lead to unintended information disclosure, and possibly a crash.

This has been corrected upstream [2].

Moonlight-common-c contains the core GameStream client code shared between Moonlight clients. Moonlight-common-c is vulnerable to buffer overflow starting in commit f57bd745b4cbed577ea654fad4701bea4d38b44c. A malicious game streaming server could exploit a buffer overflow vulnerability to crash a moonlight client. Achieving RCE is possible but unlikely, due to stack canaries in use by modern compiler toolchains. The published binaries for official clients Qt, Android, iOS/tvOS, and Embedded are built with stack canaries, but some unofficial clients may not use stack canaries. This vulnerability takes place after the pairing process, so it requires the client to be tricked into pairing to a malicious host. It is not possible to perform using a man-in-the-middle due to public key pinning that takes place during the pairing process. The bug was addressed in commit b2497a3918a6d79808d9fd0c04734786e70d5954.
