A deserialization vulnerability in NettyRpc v1.2 allows attackers to execute arbitrary commands via sending a crafted RPC request.

[I've seen multiple news articles & blogs in the wake of the coordinated disclosure today, but no postings here yet, so lets start fixing that.]

Google, Cloudflare, AWS, and others released details today of a protocol-level issue in HTTP/2 being exploited in recent months for denial-of-service attacks:

This attack works via the multiplexed streams feature of HTTP/2, in which the client repeatedly makes a request for a new stream, and then immediately sends a RSTSTREAM frame to cancel them, resulting in the server doing lots of extra work to set up and tear down the streams, while not hitting any server-side limit on a maximum number of active streams per connection.

Original Description Netty-handler has been found to no validate hostnames when using TLS in its default configuration. As a result netty-handler is vulnerable to man-in-the-middle attacks. Users would need to set the protocol to "HTTPS" in the SSLParameters of the SSLEngine to opt in to host name validation. A change in default behavior is expected in the 5.x release branch with no backport planned.

In the interim users are advised to enable host name validation in their configurations. See https://github.com/netty/netty/issues/8537 for details on the forthcoming change in default behavior.

CVE-2021-21290 contains an incomplete fix, and this addresses the issue found in netty. When using multipart decoders in netty, local information disclosure can occur via the local system temporary directory if temporary storing of uploads on the disk is enabled.

Remedy

As a workaround, specify one's own `java.io.tmpdir` when starting the JVM or use DefaultHttpDataFactory.setBaseDir(...) to set the directory to something that is only readable by the current user.

A flaw was found in Netty in the way it handles the amount of data it compresses and decompresses. The Compression/Decompression codecs should enforce memory allocation size limits to avoid an Out of Memory Error (OOME) or exhaustion of the memory pool.

A flaw was found in the way Netty’s CookieDecoder method validated cookie name and value characters. An attacker could use this flaw to bypass the httpOnly flag on sensitive cookies.

Netty is vulnerable to a denial of service, caused by an error in SslHandler. A remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability using a specially-crafted SSLv2Hello message to exhaust all available CPU resources and cause the application to enter into an infinite loop.
