Pivotal Spring Framework is vulnerable to cross-site tracing, caused by a flaw in the HiddenHttpMethodFilter in Spring MVC. By persuading a victim to visit a specially-crafted Web site, an attacker could exploit this vulnerability to cause the victim's browser to invoke a TRACE request to return sensitive header information including cookies or authentication data from third-party domains.

A flaw was found in Spring Framework, versions 5.0.x prior to 5.0.6, versions 4.3.x prior to 4.3.17, and older unsupported versions allows applications to expose STOMP over WebSocket endpoints with a simple, in-memory STOMP broker through the spring-messaging module. A malicious user (or attacker) can craft a message to the broker that can lead to a regular expression, denial of service attack.

XStream is a simple library to serialize objects to XML and back again. In affected versions this vulnerability may allow a remote attacker to allocate 100% CPU time on the target system depending on CPU type or parallel execution of such a payload resulting in a denial of service only by manipulating the processed input stream. No user is affected, who followed the recommendation to setup XStream's security framework with a whitelist limited to the minimal required types. XStream 1.4.18 uses no longer a blacklist by default, since it cannot be secured for general purpose.

A flaw was found in the Java logging library Apache Log4j in version 1.x . This allows a remote attacker to execute code on the server if the deployed application is configured to use JMSAppender.

In 1.x you will find that there are two places where lookups are done - that is JMSAppender.java:207 and JMSAppender.java:222 - if you set TopicBindingName or TopicConnectionFactoryBindingName to something that JNDI can handle - for example "ldap://host:port/a" JNDI will do exactly the same thing it does for 2.x - so 1.x is vulnerable, just attack vector is "safer" as it depends on configuration rather than user input

This flaw in Log4j 2.x is tracked via CVE-2021-44228

Source: Red Hat

Remedy

These are the possible mitigations for this flaw for releases version 1.x: - Comment out or remove JMSAppender in the Log4j configuration if it is used - Remove the JMSAppender class from the classpath. For example: ``` zip -q -d log4j-*.jar org/apache/log4j/net/JMSAppender.class ``` - Restrict access for the OS user on the platform running the application to prevent modifying the Log4j configuration by the attacker.

Impact The vulnerability may allow a remote attacker has sufficient rights to execute commands of the host only by manipulating the processed input stream. No user is affected, who followed the recommendation to setup XStream's security framework with a whitelist limited to the minimal required types.

Patches If you rely on XStream's default blacklist of the Security Framework, you will have to use at least version 1.4.17.

Workarounds See workarounds for the different versions covering all CVEs.

Remedy

Depending on the version of XStream used there are various usage patterns that mitigate this flaw, though we would strongly recommend using the allow list approach if at all possible as there are likely more class combinations the deny list approach may not address. Allow list approach ```java XStream xstream = new XStream(); XStream.setupDefaultSecurity(xstream); xstream.allowTypesByWildcard(new String[] {"com.misc.classname"}) ``` Deny list for XStream 1.4.16 (this should also address some previous flaws found in 1.4.7 - > 1.4.15) ```java xstream.denyTypesByRegExp(new String[]{ ".*\\.Lazy(?:Search)?Enumeration.*", "(?:java|sun)\\.rmi\\..*" }); ``` Deny list for XStream 1.4.15 ```java xstream.denyTypes(new String[]{ "sun.awt.datatransfer.DataTransferer$IndexOrderComparator", "sun.swing.SwingLazyValue", "com.sun.corba.se.impl.activation.ServerTableEntry", "com.sun.tools.javac.processing.JavacProcessingEnvironment$NameProcessIterator" }); xstream.denyTypesByRegExp(new String[]{ ".*\\$ServiceNameIterator", "javafx\\.collections\\.ObservableList\\$.*", ".*\\.bcel\\..*\\.util\\.ClassLoader" }); xstream.denyTypeHierarchy(java.io.InputStream.class ); xstream.denyTypeHierarchy(java.nio.channels.Channel.class ); xstream.denyTypeHierarchy(javax.activation.DataSource.class ); xstream.denyTypeHierarchy(javax.sql.rowset.BaseRowSet.class ); ``` Deny list for XStream 1.4.13 ```java xstream.denyTypes(new String[]{ "javax.imageio.ImageIO$ContainsFilter" }); xstream.denyTypes(new Class[]{ java.lang.ProcessBuilder.class }); ``` Deny list for XStream 1.4.7 -> 1.4.12 ```java xstream.denyTypes(new String[]{ "javax.imageio.ImageIO$ContainsFilter" }); xstream.denyTypes(new Class[]{ java.lang.ProcessBuilder.class, java.beans.EventHandler.class, java.lang.ProcessBuilder.class, java.lang.Void.class, void.class }); ``` Deny list for versions prior to XStream 1.4.7 ```java xstream.registerConverter(new Converter() { public boolean canConvert(Class type) { return type != null && (type == java.beans.EventHandler.class || type == java.lang.ProcessBuilder.class || type == java.lang.Void.class || void.class || type.getName().equals("javax.imageio.ImageIO$ContainsFilter") || Proxy.isProxy(type)); } public Object unmarshal(HierarchicalStreamReader reader, UnmarshallingContext context) { throw new ConversionException("Unsupported type due to security reasons."); } public void marshal(Object source, HierarchicalStreamWriter writer, MarshallingContext context) { throw new ConversionException("Unsupported type due to security reasons."); } }, XStream.PRIORITY_LOW); ```
