A denial of service flaw was found in the way SSL module implementation of Python3, version 3 of the Python programming language (aka Python 3000), performed matching of the certificate's name in the case it contained many '' wildcard characters. A remote attacker, able to obtain valid certificate with its name containing a lot of '' wildcard characters could use this flaw to cause denial of service (excessive CPU consumption) by issuing request to validate such a certificate for / to an application using the Python's ssl.matchhostname() functionality.

The pyOpenSSL module implements hostname identity checks but it did not properly handle hostnames in the certificate that contain null bytes. In all releases prior to 0.13.1, the string formatting of subjectAltName X509Extension instances incorrectly truncated fields of the name when encountering the null byte.

When a CA than an SSL client trusts issues a server certificate that has a null byte in the subjectAltName, remote attackers can obtain a certifcate for 'www.foo.org\0.example.com' from the CA to spoof 'www.foo.org' and conduct man-in-the-middle attacks between the pyOpenSSL-using client and SSL servers.

It was reported [1] that Samba's pamwinbind module would fail open (allowing access) when the requiremembershipof option is used as an argument to pamwinbind, and contains a non-existent group as the value. In such a configuration, rather then failing and not permitting authentication which is what would be expected, pamwinbind will allow authentication to proceed.

For instance, if the following is specified and the user is not a member of the group 'Admin', they will not obtain access to the system:

auth sufficient pamwinbind.so usefirstpass requiremembershipof=Admin

On the other hand, if the non-existent group 'AdminOops' is specified, the user is obviously not a member of said group, authentication will be permitted:

auth sufficient pamwinbind.so usefirstpass requiremembershipof=AdminOops

The commit [2] that most likely introduced this flaw indicates that this was introduced October 2009 and another commit [3] looks like the fix, although that is for another bug [4] that's somewhat related to this issue and somewhat not.
