FreePBX is an open source IP PBX. Prior to 17.0.9, the UCP Node server on ports 8001 and 8003 uses io.use(checkAuth) in node/lib/server.js, but Socket.IO version 4 applies that middleware only to the default namespace. An unauthenticated client can connect to custom namespaces that do not consistently invoke checkAuth in node/lib/auth.js and send crafted event values containing carriage-return or newline characters through the Asterisk Manager Interface action path patched by node/lib/asterisk-manager-patch.js, allowing arbitrary commands to execute as the asterisk service user. This issue is fixed in version 17.0.9.

FreePBX is an open source IP PBX. From 17.0.1 until 17.0.7, the FreePBX Music on Hold module permits dangerous command-line options for /usr/bin/mpg123 and other allowed players in validateCustomConfiguration() in Music.class.php. An authenticated administrator can use options that write files, open control channels, or create Asterisk call files because applicationUsesDisallowedPlayerOption() does not reject those arguments, resulting in arbitrary command execution as the asterisk service user. FreePBX is an open source IP PBX. From 16.0.0 until 16.0.11 and 17.0.4, the FreePBX missedcall module places the inbound Caller ID name from crafted SIP From headers into the missedcalllog INSERT in agi-bin/missedcallnotify.php without escaping or bound parameters. An unauthenticated caller can inject SQL when a monitored extension goes unanswered, corrupting the database and modifying FreePBX administrator accounts to obtain unauthorized remote access. FreePBX is an open source IP PBX. In versions below 16.0.71 and 17.0.6, the backup module does not properly sanitize data during restore operations, potentially leading to compromise if the backup contains carefully crafted hostile data. During backup restore operations, FreePBX extracts selected files from a user-supplied tar archive. If a malicious file exists in the archive, it is read and passed directly to unserialize() without validation, class restrictions, or integrity checks. This issue allows Remote Code Execution during restoration of the backup as the web server user (typically asterisk or www-data). The attack does not require shell access, CLI access, or filesystem write permissions beyond the normal restore workflow. Authentication with a known username that has sufficient access permissions and/or write access to backup files is required. This issue has been fixed in versions 16.0.71 and 17.0.6.

FreePBX is an open source IP PBX. Prior to 17.0.8, the FreePBX api module's OAuth2 implementation does not sufficiently validate client credentials during token issuance. Knowledge of a valid clientid is required. FreePBX is an open-source web-based graphical user interface (GUI) that manages Asterisk. Prior to 17.0.5 and 16.0.17, FreePBX module api (PBX API) is vulnerable to privilege escalation by authenticated users with REST/GraphQL API access. This vulnerability allows an attacker to forge a valid JWT with full access to the REST and GraphQL APIs on a FreePBX that they've already connected to, possibly as a lower privileged user. The JWT is signed using the api-oauth.key private key. An attacker can generate their own token if they possess this key (e.g., by accessing an affected instance), and specify any scopes they wish (e.g., rest, gql), bypassing traditional authorization checks. However, FreePBX enforces that the jti (JWT ID) claim must exist in the database (apiaccesstokens table in the asterisk MySQL database) in order for the token to be accepted. Therefore, the attacker must know a jti value that already exists on the target instance. This vulnerability is fixed in 17.0.5 and 16.0.17.

FreePBX is an open-source web-based graphical user interface (GUI) that manages Asterisk. Prior to versions 16.0.45 and 17.0.24 of the FreePBX framework, an authenticated local privilege escalation exists in the deprecated FreePBX startup script amportal. In the deprecated amportal utility, the lookup for the freepbxengine file occurs in /etc/asterisk/ directories. Typically, these are configured by FreePBX as writable by the asterisk user and any members of the asterisk group. This means that a member of the asterisk group can add their own freepbxengine file in /etc/asterisk/ and upon amportal executing, it would exec that file with root permissions (even though the file was created and placed by a non-root user). Version 16.0.45 and 17.0.24 contain a fix for the issue. Other mitigation strategies are also available. Confirm only trusted local OS system users are members of the asterisk group. Look for suspicious files in the /etc/asterisk/ directory (via Admin -> Config Edit in the GUI, or via CLI). Double-check that livedangerously = no is set (or unconfigured, as the default is no) in /etc/asterisk/asterisk.conf file. Eliminate any unsafe custom use of Asterisk dial plan applications and functions that potentially can manipulate the file system, e.g., System(), FILE(), etc.

In versions prior to 16.0.68.39 for FreePBX 16 and versions prior to 17.0.18.38 for FreePBX 17, a reflected cross-site scripting vulnerability is present on the Asterisk HTTP Status page. The vulnerability can be exploited by unauthenticated attackers to obtain cookies from logged-in users, allowing them to hijack a session of an administrative user. The theft of admin session cookies allows attackers to gain control over the FreePBX admin interface, enabling them to access sensitive data, modify system configurations, create backdoor accounts, and cause service disruption.
