In Phoenix SCT WinFlash 1.1.12.0 through 1.5.74.0, the included drivers could be used by a malicious Windows application to gain elevated privileges. Adverse impacts are limited to the Windows environment and there is no known direct impact to the UEFI firmware. This was fixed in late June 2019.

Summary

Phoenix transports do not limit the number of channels in a given connection, making it easy to spawn hundreds of thousands of processes over a single connection, and, eventually reaching the max processes VM limit. The solution is to limit the number of channels per transport, so an attacker needs to start new HTTP/WebSocket connections, allowing third-party services to apply rate limits and intervene more easily.

Impact

An unauthenticated remote attacker can cause a denial of service against any Phoenix app that exposes LongPoll/WebSocket transports.

The Phoenix Code's configuration on macOS, specifically the presence of entitlements: "com.apple.security.cs.allow-dyld-environment-variables" and "com.apple.security.cs.disable-library-validation" allows for Dynamic Library (Dylib) injection. A local attacker with unprivileged access can use environment variables like DYLDINSERTLIBRARIES to successfully inject code in application's context and bypass Transparency, Consent, and Control (TCC). Acquired resource access is limited to previously granted permissions by the user. Access to other resources beyond granted-permissions requires user interaction with a system prompt asking for permission.
