pypdf is a free and open-source pure-python PDF library. An attacker who uses a vulnerability present in versions prior to 6.10.1 can craft a PDF which leads to long runtimes. This requires cross-reference streams with wrong large /Size values or object streams with wrong large /N values. This has been fixed in pypdf 6.10.1. pypdf is an open source, pure-python PDF library. In affected versions an attacker may craft a PDF which leads to an infinite loop if parsecontentstream is executed. That is, for example, the case if the user extracted text from such a PDF. This issue was introduced in pull request #969 and resolved in pull request #1828. Users are advised to upgrade. An attacker who uses this vulnerability can craft a PDF which leads to an infinite loop. This requires accessing the outlines/bookmarks.

Patches

This has been fixed in pypdf 6.6.2.

Workarounds

If projects cannot upgrade yet, consider applying the changes from PR #3610.
