A flaw was found in sudo before version 1.8.28. When sudo is configured to allow a user to run commands as an arbitrary user via the 'ALL' keyword in a 'Runas' specification, it is possible to run commands as root.

Remedy

This vulnerability only affects configurations of sudo that have a runas user list that includes an exclusion of root. The most simple example is: ~~~ someuser ALL=(ALL, !root) /usr/bin/somecommand ~~~ The exclusion is specified using an excalamation mark (!). In this example, the "root" user is specified by name. The root user may also be identified in other ways, such as by user id: ~~~ someuser ALL=(ALL, !#0) /usr/bin/somecommand ~~~ or by reference to a runas alias: ~~~ Runas_Alias MYGROUP = root, adminuser someuser ALL=(ALL, !MYGROUP) /usr/bin/somecommand ~~~ To ensure your sudoers configuration is not affected by this vulnerability, we recommend examining each sudoers entry that includes the `!` character in the runas specification, to ensure that the root user is not among the exclusions. These can be found in the /etc/sudoers file or files under /etc/sudoers.d.

As per the researcher this vulnerability:

- is exploitable by any local user (normal users and system users, sudoers and non-sudoers), without authentication (i.e., the attacker does not need to know the user's password);

- was introduced in July 2011 (commit 8255ed69), and affects all legacy versions from 1.8.2 to 1.8.31p2 and all stable versions from 1.9.0 to 1.9.5p1, in their default configuration.

This could lead to privilege escalation.

It is possible to prevent a user-specified editor from being used by sudoedit by adding the following line to the sudoers file. ~~~ Defaults!sudoedit env_delete+="SUDO_EDITOR VISUAL EDITOR" ~~~ To restrict the editor when editing specific files, a Cmnd_Alias can be used, for example: ~~~ Cmnd_Alias EDIT_MOTD = sudoedit /etc/motd Defaults!EDIT_MOTD env_delete+="SUDO_EDITOR VISUAL EDITOR" user ALL = EDIT_MOTD ~~~ But if possible please update the affected package as soon as possible.

There are mitigation strategies you may be interested in incorporating into your code:

Take this vulnerable code, for example:

The idea is that any bit can be flipped in auth, and it will result in a mis-authentication. We prove this is a potential vulnerability in OpenSSH, OpenSSL, MySQL, and SUDO. To mitigate this, it is important to have tight logic such that a single-bit flip will not result in unintended execution. For example:

In this case, the auth variable must be corrupted into the exact authentication pattern, which is fairly improbable.

A vulnerability in functionality for adding support of SHA-2 digests along with the command was found. The sudoers plugin performs this digest verification while matching rules, and later independently calls execve() to execute the binary. This results in a race condition if the digest functionality is used as suggested (in fact, the rules are matched before the user is prompted for a password, so there is not negligible time frame to replace the binary from underneath sudo). Versions affected are since 1.8.7.

DISPUTED Sudo through 1.8.29 allows local users to escalate to root if they have write access to file descriptor 3 of the sudo process. This occurs because of a race condition between determining a uid, and the setresuid and openat system calls. The attacker can write "ALL ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD:ALL" to /proc/#####/fd/3 at a time when Sudo is prompting for a password. NOTE: This has been disputed due to the way Linux /proc works. It has been argued that writing to /proc/#####/fd/3 would only be viable if you had permission to write to /etc/sudoers. Even with write permission to /proc/#####/fd/3, it would not help you write to /etc/sudoers.
