Frequently Asked Questions

1

Which issue can be triggered by an unauthenticated remote client?

When Digest authentication is enabled with AuthDigestNcCheck, forged Authorization headers can let an unauthenticated remote client cause a denial of service through mod_auth_digest.

2

Does any issue require attacker permissions before it can be exploited?

The mod_dav memory-calculation issue requires an attacker to have permission to create WebDAV locks. It can crash Apache server child processes.

3

Which Apache configurations should be reviewed first during triage?

Review deployments using CGI programs with internal redirects, WebDAV locking, mod_heartmonitor unicast listeners, Digest authentication with AuthDigestNcCheck, mod_charset_lite, mod_rewrite lookahead expressions using %{LA-U:HTTP:...}, and mod_http2. Also review configurations where SessionCookieRemove can change across internal redirects, because session cookies may be sent to a backend server.
