As per upstream advisory:

Samba as an Active Directory Domain Controller has to take care to protect a number of sensitive attributes, and to follow a security model from Active Directory that relies totally on the intersection of NT security descriptors and the underlying X.500 Directory Access Protocol (as then expressed in LDAP) schema constraints for security.

Some attributes in Samba AD are sensitive, they apply to one object but protect others.

Users who can set msDS-AllowedToDelegateTo can become any user in the domain on the server pointed at by this list. Likewise in a domain mixed with Microsoft Windows, Samba's lack of protection of sidHistory would be a similar issue.

This would be limited to users with the right to create users or modify them (typically those who created them), however, due to other flaws, all users are able to create new user objects.

Remedy

Setting "gensec:require_pac=true" in the smb.conf makes, due to a cache prime in winbind, the DOMAIN\user lookup succeed, provided nss_winbind is in use, 'winbind use default domain = no' (the default) and no error paths are hit. It would be prudent to pre-create disabled users in Active Directory matching on all privileged names not held in Active Directory, eg ~~~ samba-tool user add root -H ldap://$SERVER -U$USERNAME%$PASSWORD --random-password samba-tool user add ubuntu -H ldap://$SERVER -U$USERNAME%$PASSWORD --random-password ~~~ (repeat for eg all system users under 1000 in /etc/passwd or special to any other AD-connected services, eg perhaps "admin" for a web-app)

Impact

The ReDoS flaw allows an attacker to exhaust the server's capacity to process incoming requests by sending a WebSocket handshake request containing a header of the following form:

Sec-WebSocket-Extensions: a; b="\c\c\c\c\c\c\c\c\c\c ...

That is, a header containing an unclosed string parameter value whose content is a repeating two-byte sequence of a backslash and some other character. The parser takes exponential time to reject this header as invalid, and this will block the processing of any other work on the same thread. Thus if you are running a single-threaded server, such a request can render your service completely unavailable.

Patches

Users should upgrade to version 0.1.5.

Workarounds

There are no known work-arounds other than disabling any public-facing WebSocket functionality you are operating.

A vulnerability was found in upstream release cryptsetup-2.2.0 where, there's a bug in LUKS2 format validation code, that is effectively invoked on every device/image presenting itself as LUKS2 container. The bug is in segments validation code in file 'lib/luks2/luks2jsonmetadata.c' in function hdrvalidatesegments(struct cryptdevice cd, jsonobject hdrjobj) where the code does not check for possible overflow on memory allocation used for intervals array (see statement "intervals = malloc(firstbackup sizeof(intervals));"). Due to the bug, library can be tricked to expect such allocation was successful but for far less memory then originally expected. Later it may read data FROM image crafted by an attacker and actually write such data BEYOND allocated memory.
