Netskope was made aware of a security vulnerability in its NSClient product for version 100 & prior where a malicious non-admin user can disable the Netskope client by using a specially-crafted package. The root cause of the problem was a user control code when called by a Windows ServiceController did not validate the permissions associated with the user before executing the user control code. This user control code had permissions to terminate the NSClient service.

Remedy

Netskope patched the issue and released a new version. The issue was fixed in Release101. Customers are recommended to upgrade their client to the versions R101 or greater. Netskope was notified about a security gap in Netskope Client enrollment process where NSClient is using a static token “Orgkey” as authentication parameter. Since this is a static token, if leaked, cannot be rotated or revoked. A malicious actor can use this token to enroll NSClient from a customer’s tenant and impersonate a user.

Remedy

Netskope has fixed the gap and recommends customers to review their deployments of Netskope Client and enable the fix in their tenants. Here is the detailed guide - https://docs.netskope.com/en/secure-enrollment/

Netskope client is impacted by a vulnerability where an authenticated, local attacker can view sensitive information stored in NSClient logs which should be restricted. The vulnerability exists because the sensitive information is not masked/scrubbed before writing in the logs. A malicious user can use the sensitive information to download data and impersonate another user.

Remedy

Upgrade to the latest version available.

Netskope client prior to 89.x on macOS is impacted by a local privilege escalation vulnerability. The XPC implementation of nsAuxiliarySvc process does not perform validation on new connections before accepting the connection. Thus any low privileged user can connect and call external methods defined in XPC service as root, elevating their privilege to the highest level.

Buffer Overflow
CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H

The Netskope client service, v57 before 57.2.0.219 and v60 before 60.2.0.214, running with NT\SYSTEM privilege, accepts network connections from localhost. The connection handling function in this service suffers from a stack based buffer overflow in "doHandshakefromServer" function. Local users can use this vulnerability to trigger a crash of the service and potentially cause additional impact on the system.

Remedy

Remediations were applied in R62 onwards and retrospectively applied in golden releases R60.2.0.214 and R57.2.0.219. Link to latest support golden releases - https://support.netskope.com/hc/en-us/articles/360014589894-Netskope-Client.

CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H

The Netskope client service running with NT\SYSTEM privileges accepts network connections from localhost to start various services and execute commands. The connection handling function of Netskope client before R100 in this service utilized a relative path to download and unzip configuration files on the machine. This relative path provided a way for local users to write arbitrary files at a location which is accessible to only higher privileged users. This can be exploited by local users to execute code with NT\SYSTEM privileges on the end machine.

Remedy

Upgrade netskope client to R100 and above.

Netskope has identified a potential gap in its agent (Netskope Client) in which a malicious insider can potentially tamper the Netskope Client configuration by performing MITM (Man-in-the-Middle) activity on the Netskope Client communication channel. A successful exploitation would require administrative privileges on the machine, and could result in temporarily altering the configuration of Netskope Client or permanently disabling or removing the agent from the machine.

Remedy

Customers can apply the fix by enabling the “Secure Configuration” option from the tenant under Settings -> Security Cloud Platform -> Netskope Client -> MDM Distribution -> Secure Enrollment page. Customers are recommended to upgrade the Netskope Client to the latest versions of R123, R126, R129 or higher and adopt “Netskope Client Secure Configuration Service” for APIs.

Race Condition
CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H

The Netskope client service (prior to R96) on Windows runs as NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM which writes log files to a writable directory (C:\Users\Public\netSkope) for a standard user. The files are created and written with a SYSTEM account except one file (logplaceholder) which inherits permission giving all users full access control list. Netskope client restricts access to this file by allowing only read permissions as a standard user. Whenever the Netskope client service restarts, it deletes the logplaceholder and recreates, creating a race condition, which can be exploited by a malicious local user to create the file and set ACL permissions on the file. Once the file is created by a malicious user with proper ACL permissions, all files within C:\Users\Public\netSkope\ becomes modifiable by the unprivileged user. By using Windows pseudo-symlink, these files can be pointed to other places in the system and thus malicious users will be able to elevate privileges.

Remedy

Netskope has patched the vulnerability and released a binary with a fix. Customers are recommended to upgrade their Netskope clients to v100 or later. Netskope was made aware of a security vulnerability in Netskope Endpoint DLP’s Content Control Driver where a double-fetch issue leads to heap overflow. The vulnerability arises from the fact that the NumberOfBytes argument to ExAllocatePoolWithTag, and the Length argument for RtlCopyMemory, both independently dereference their value from the user supplied input buffer inside the EpdlpSetUsbAction function, known as a double-fetch. If this length value grows to a higher value in between these two calls, it will result in the RtlCopyMemory call copying user-supplied memory contents outside the range of the allocated buffer, resulting in a heap overflow. A malicious attacker will need admin privileges to exploit the issue. This issue affects Endpoint DLP version below R119.

Remedy

Netskope has patch the issue with R119 and onwards and have also backported to R117.1.6

Netskope Client on Mac OS is impacted by a vulnerability in which the postinstall script does not properly validate the path of the file “nsinstallation”. Netskope is notified about a potential gap in its agent (NS Client) in which a malicious actor could trigger a memory leak by sending a crafted DNS packet to a machine. A successful exploitation may require administrative privileges on the machine, based on the exact configuration. Netskope was notified of an out-of-bounds heap read affecting the Endpoint DLP (EPDLP) service of the Netskope Client. A local standard user could potentially send a specially crafted message that is not properly validated with a bounds check, likely crashing the kernel driver handler. Successful exploitation could potentially crash the EPDLP service, temporarily interrupting DLP enforcement. A successful exploit could potentially also reveal per-boot memory layout information to unauthorized users.

Integer Overflow

Netskope was notified about a potential gap in Netskope Endpoint DLP (EPDLP) running on Windows systems. Successful exploitation of the gap could potentially allow a privileged user to send a crafted message to the EPDLP process port to trigger an integer overflow, leading to memory corruption. Successful exploitation would require the EPDLP module to be enabled in the client configuration, and that Memory Integrity is disabled. A successful exploit could potentially result in a denial-of-service, arbitrary code execution, or privilege escalation on the local machine.

First published (updated )

An information leakage vulnerability exists in the Endpoint DLP component (epdlpdrv.sys) of Netskope Client for Windows prior to version R141. An internal communication channel used by the user-space hook DLL to pass messages through the kernel driver to the daemon lacked proper token-based message validation, allowing local unprivileged processes to send unauthorized queries. Additionally, a reply buffer used by the port message handler was not properly initialized before returning data, leaking residual kernel pool memory from prior allocations. A local unprivileged attacker could exploit this vulnerability to enumerate DLP configuration and feature flags, extract live session tokens, and read kernel memory fragments from other users' operations.
