The example code for the digest authentication functionality (httpauthentication.rb) in Ruby on Rails before 2.3.3 defines an authenticateorrequestwithhttpdigest block that returns nil instead of false when the user does not exist, which allows context-dependent attackers to bypass authentication for applications that are derived from this example by sending an invalid username without a password.

Impact Active Storage's DiskService#pathfor does not validate that the resolved filesystem path remains within the storage root directory. If a blob key containing path traversal sequences (e.g. ../) is used, it could allow reading, writing, or deleting arbitrary files on the server. Blob keys are expected to be trusted strings, but some applications could be passing user input as keys and would be affected.

Impact Prior to puma version 5.6.2, puma may not always call close on the response body. Rails, prior to version 7.0.2.2, depended on the response body being closed in order for its CurrentAttributes implementation to work correctly.
From Rails:
Under certain circumstances response bodies will not be closed, for example a bug in a webserver[1] or a bug in a Rack middleware. In the event a response is not notified of a close, ActionDispatch::Executor will not know to reset thread local state for the next request. This can lead to data being leaked to subsequent requests, especially when interacting with ActiveSupport::CurrentAttributes.
The combination of these two behaviors (Puma not closing the body + Rails' Executor implementation) causes information leakage.
Patches This problem is fixed in Puma versions 5.6.2 and 4.3.11.
This problem is fixed in Rails versions 7.02.2, 6.1.4.6, 6.0.4.6, and 5.2.6.2.

Workarounds
Upgrade to Rails versions 7.02.2, 6.1.4.6, 6.0.4.6, and 5.2.6.2.

Denial of Service Vulnerability in Action View
Impact ------ Specially crafted accept headers can cause the Action View template location code to consume 100% CPU, causing the server unable to process requests. This impacts all Rails applications that render views.
All users running an affected release should either upgrade or use one of the workarounds immediately.
Releases -------- The 6.0.0.beta3, 5.2.2.1, 5.1.6.2, 5.0.7.2, and 4.2.11.1 releases are available at the normal locations.
Workarounds ----------- This vulnerability can be mitigated by wrapping render calls with respondto blocks. For example, the following example is vulnerable:

But the following code is not vulnerable:
ruby class UserController < ApplicationController def index respondto |format| format.html { render "index" } end end end
Implicit rendering is impacted, so this code is vulnerable:

Alternatively to specifying the format, the following monkey patch can be applied in an initializer:

Please note that only the 5.2.x, 5.1.x, 5.0.x, and 4.2.x series are supported at present. Users of earlier unsupported releases are advised to upgrade as soon as possible as we cannot guarantee the continued availability of security fixes for unsupported releases.

There is a possible ReDoS vulnerability in the Accept header parsing routines of Action Dispatch. This vulnerability has been assigned the CVE identifier CVE-2024-26142.

Directory traversal vulnerability in actionpack/lib/abstractcontroller/base.rb in the implicit-render implementation in Ruby on Rails before 3.2.18, 4.0.x before 4.0.5, and 4.1.x before 4.1.1, when certain route globbing configurations are enabled, allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via a crafted request.
A ReDoS based DoS vulnerability in the GlobalID <1.0.1 which could allow an attacker supplying a carefully crafted input can cause the regular expression engine to take an unexpected amount of time. All users running an affected release should either upgrade or use one of the workarounds immediately.
Summary
Certain configurations of rails-html-sanitizer < 1.4.4 use an inefficient regular expression that is susceptible to excessive backtracking when attempting to sanitize certain SVG attributes. This may lead to a denial of service through CPU resource consumption.
Mitigation
Upgrade to rails-html-sanitizer >= 1.4.4.
Severity
The maintainers have evaluated this as High Severity 7.5 (CVSS3.1).
